Microsoft’s Project Pink, (code name for their new phones) was noticeably absent from the Mobile World Congress in February. Last month Gizmodo leaked documents stating that the new Microsoft “Turtle” will be released late in April, with rumors hinting that the Microsoft “Pure” isn’t far behind. They hire experts to figure out which bundles will suck the most money out of the customer’s pockets. People are catching on, however, and fighting back with prepaid phones and other work-arounds. Verizon had 13,000 lay offs last year and is expected to do the same this year. With their land line business shrinking and stiff competition in the wireless market, Verizon faces a tough road ahead. The economy hasn’t helped, but Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg feels 2011 will be the turn around year. Most of these lay offs are in their land line side of the business, but some lay offs should be expected in the wireless side as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Verizon Wireless was the first to drop their unlimited calling plan rate Tuesday, followed by the other 2 big providers, AT&T and Sprint. Verizon now charges $70 for unlimited calling, a drop of 30%. AT&T added features to their all inclusive plan, and Sprint added surfing. Does this remind you of the price wars we used to see between gas stations? Read the rest of this entry »

According to a study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, 42% of mobile users won’t switch carriers due to the outrageous early termination fees (ETF). According to the report, even when mobile users are somewhat or very dissatisfied with their cell phone provider, the cost of early termination keeps them locked into the contract. So you bought a new or used cell phone, and a nice one at that - speakers, 3G, multimedia, the works - but now its time to hook it up with a plan for it to be used. Depending on your circumstances, particularly whether or not you already have a plan in order, activating your cell phone may or may not be easy. The first order of business is to make considerations about the carrier you will be using, if you haven’t done so already. In the United States, the four most popular carriers are AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. For each carrier, there are separate guidelines you’ll need to follow to activate your phone.
