New research from Forrester reveals that only 17% of Americans own a Smartphone. Forrester’s research indicated that while 82% of Americans own a cell phone, the high tech Smartphones are not so popular. In an article written by Amy Gahran, CNN.com Tech, Ms. Gahran reported “this is true even among the most digitally savvy generations: Gen X (roughly ages 31-40) and Gen Y (roughly ages 18-30).” And according to Forrester, less than 25% of Gen Yers and Gen Xers own Smartphones. Afraid your mom can’t learn how to use a Smartphone? The new “Out of the Box” Smartphone tutorial may be just the ticket. The idea is to place the Smartphone in the cut out in the book and use the easy to follow arrows to click and perform the tasks you want to learn. It’s a hands-on way to learn your Smartphone. They hire experts to figure out which bundles will suck the most money out of the customer’s pockets. People are catching on, however, and fighting back with prepaid phones and other work-arounds. CJAM Cell Phone Threat Scan Service (CJAM-CTS) blocks signals in areas where mobile service is not welcome. This is a HUGE help in schools and prisons (is that the same?) where cell phones are a big no-no. Read the rest of this entry »

Just 2 days after the earthquake of January 12, 2010 hit Haiti, the first ever EIR (Emergency Information Service) was set up and in place to help. The goal was to provide SMS messaging on cell phones to the disaster-torn country. An Irish firm has released new software, Bully Stop, allowing parents to monitor and block text messaging and both identified and unidentified callers on their children’s phones. LG is sponsoring PSA ads on YouTube to influence teens who are sexting. The theme of these ads is to “Stop and Think” before sending that sexting. The ads also concentrate their efforts on mean rumor texting. (See the ads at Give It a Ponder.)

What is SEXTING? It is a coined word for sending text messages with sexual content, be it text or images, that will soon be showing up in the dictionary. Sexting is a sign of the technology affecting our society, for good or bad. Without being judgmental, technology affects all of our daily lives. Sexting is just one more example of how technology permeates our awareness.

Vanity or stupidity? As a woman was walking home from a train station near her home in Olney, Maryland, she was accosted by an unknown man, heard a click and felt a gun pressed to her neck. There’s a new software application named TipSoft that allows you to report crimes anonymously via text messaging. The obvious target market is the texting generation who already live by their thumbs. This same group also witnesses more crimes than the average middle aged person, so the idea is have them help law enforcement agencies by anonymous reporting.
