There were 81 million Smartphones sold world-wide in the third quarter of 2010 alone. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, “Smartphones accounted for nearly one in five mobile phones sold that quarter. The chiefs of Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. think Smartphones could account for nearly three of every four phones sold by the middle of the decade. Between the emergence of the iPad, apps, Android Smartphones and the introduction of 4G networks, 2010 was the year the computer truly went mobile.” Welcome to 2011 and the mobile world. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will show off “a slew of new slates” at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. This is according to a report in the New York Times. Microsoft did the same thing last January, and sales were flat for the Windows 7 tablets. HP then postponed their launch of the Windows 7 tablet supposedly because they bought Palm because the WebOS was more suitable for tablets. Dino Zaharakis has designed a stand to fit the iPad, iPhone, virtually all Smartphones and eReaders, like the Kindle. The 11 year old from Pennsylvania accepted a challenge from his father to design a better stand for his iPad, and also a website to market it. The prize? Dino’s dad would buy him a new cell phone. Pulse News Reader is gaining in popularity. Pulse (Alphonso Labs), was released back in May 2010. It gives users the ability to build a personal newsfeed with the newspapers, magazines and blogs of their choice. Originally designed for the iPhone, it is now available for the Android platform as well. It has been the top selling news app for the iPad, and consistently in the top 40 of all paid apps. The best news though, is that although they have been charging between $1 and $4 for the app, it will now be free. The goal is to attract more users, and  paid partnerships with publishers and advertisers. Apple has filed a lawsuit claiming patent infringements by Motorola. The lawsuit alleges that 9 Motorola devices are using multitouch patents owned by Apple. The Motorola phones are the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BackFlip, Devour A555, Devour i1, and Charm. Apple claims that Motorola infringes on 6 of Apple’s patents. RIM will soon release its newest electronic gadget, the BlackPad. Meant to compete with Apple’s iPad, BlackBerry’s new BlackPad will have approximately the same dimensions as the iPad, a 9.7” diagonal screen, and will also include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology that will allow people to connect to the Internet through their BlackBerrys.
