RIM will soon release its newest electronic gadget, the BlackPad. Meant to compete with Apple’s iPad, BlackBerry’s new BlackPad will have approximately the same dimensions as the iPad, a 9.7” diagonal screen, and will also include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology that will allow people to connect to the Internet through their BlackBerrys. Foreign visitors are not exempt from the UAE ban on BlackBerry Smartphones. Like the 500,000 local subscribers, business travelers and tourists will also face the ban on using their BlackBerry Smartphones for anything other than phone calls, even if the phone originated from outside the UAE. The United Arab Emirates’ telecom authority announced this week that BlackBerry data access will be blocked. Beginning October 11th the BlackBerry will be reduced to being just a cell phone while in the UAE. This means users would no longer be able to access BlackBerry messaging, email, and the internet. Which Verizon phone will get the Android 2.2 operating system first? The just released Droid X was supposed to get the upgrade by the end of July, but as a Droid X owner, I have not seen the upgrade yet. According to research firm NPD Group, BlackBerry is still number one in sales of Smartphones in the US. But the big surprise was that the Android edged out Apple’s iPhone by 7%. Apparently more consumers wanted to use the new Google friendly interface. Perhaps these consumers were also subscribers of service providers other than AT&T, who still has exclusive rights to the iPhone. Read the rest of this entry »
