How to Improve Your Cell Phone Signal

The constant need to wave your cell phone in the air for better signal can leave you feeling like you’re holding a wand rather than an expensive communication device. Still, many cell phones these days simply don’t have the impressive signal to match up with their enchanting features, even with the large advances that cell phone technology has taken on within the past few years. So if you’re feeling like your cell phone signal is letting you down, you’re not alone – many other cell phone users are experiencing the same irritating lack of signal. But before you lose hope and stash your phone back into its box, take a look five of the possible solutions:

How to Improve Your Cell Phone Signal

  1. Battery. Your battery is a lot more important to your signal than you would think. Without a well-charged battery, it is more difficult for you to connect with another call, as accessing signal uses additional power. Plugging into a circuit or keeping your battery charged tends to yield better signal.
  2. Get a new antenna. Depending on your phone, you may be able to locate a more advanced version of your antenna from your phone’s manufacturer. Buying an antenna upgrade can improve your signal without getting a new phone. Other than the manufacturer, you may also be able to find new and improved antenna upgrades on ebay.
  3. Phone posture. If you position you phone incorrectly, you can actually ruin your signal. Since phones are made to be held in an upright position, anything drastically different will make it harder for your phone to access the signal.
  4. Cellular repeater. A cellular repeater is a device that amplifies your signal by broadcasting a boosted version throughout the local area. Cell phone repeaters can significantly improve the quality of your signal,
  5. Surroundings. Trees, mountains, buildings, or any other obstructions will inhibit your phone’s ability to catch a good signal. If your house or office is already surround by such obstacles, the only means of accessing good signal will be to exit the building, since its impossible for the antenna to find its path to a tower. While underground, the issue of finding a good signal will only increase in difficulty.

Where I live there is absolutely NO cell phone reception. My roommate and I call it the “Fortress of Solitude”. Something I have been looking into as a cheap solution is skype.

Also, Google is coming out with a new VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) style program called ‘Google Voice’ which will allow you to link all of your phone numbers (house phone, cell phone, work phone) to a single phone number. Allowing you to get all your calls anywhere, as well as MANY other features. It’s not out yet but it’s definitely in the final stages and worth keeping an eye out for.
