The Motorola Xoom, Google’s golden child Android 3.0 tablet, is great on performance testing. However, according to Aditya Bansod, Senior Director of Product Management with Sencha, a vendor that created the Sencha Touch HTML5 application framework for mobile Web apps, “The Xoom browser is not ready for prime-time — even for ‘HTML4′.” This is a major disappointment for Motorola, who touted the Xoom as the first “real Android tablet.” The Android 3.0 OS was built specifically for the tablet platform. According to Bansod, the results of a series of tests to see how the Xoom browser conforms to and performs with emerging Web standards such as HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets 3 (CSS 3) for both developers and consumers are not encouraging.

Wonder what impact your cell phone has on the environment? GoodGuide has just published a report rating the top 5 “virtuous” cell phones. The ratings are based upon not only environmentally safe practices, but also takes into consideration the social attributes as well? “Social attributes?” you may ask. This rating has to do with the safety and labor policies of the company manufacturing the cell phones. GoodGuide ranks individual models and manufacturers on 3 levels: health, environment, and social attributes. 576 phone models were rated.

Mobile phone users in the European Union will soon have universal chargers for many of their devices. According to an article by Don Reisinger, CNET.com, “DigitalEurope, the continent’s largest digital tech organization, has delivered a sample of a universal mobile phone charger to European Commission vice president Antonio Tajani. The EU said that the sample now paves the way for consumers to get their hands on devices that support the universal charger in the very near future.”

Effective January 4, 2011, Motorola will split into 2 companies. According to an article written by Peter Svensson, AP, Motorola is splitting its consumer-oriented side, which makes cell phones and cable set-top boxes, from the side that sells police radios and barcode scanners to government and corporate customers. Shareholders of record on December 21, 2010 will receive shares in both the consumer business, Motorola Mobility, and the professional business, Motorola Solutions after the first of the year. Apple has filed a lawsuit claiming patent infringements by Motorola. The lawsuit alleges that 9 Motorola devices are using multitouch patents owned by Apple. The Motorola phones are the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BackFlip, Devour A555, Devour i1, and Charm. Apple claims that Motorola infringes on 6 of Apple’s patents. Last month Microsoft sued Motorola over alleged patent infringement. Microsoft claims that the Android Smartphones are using Microsoft technology. Droid X was released on July 15th and was sold out by the next day. The rush to buy the new Droid X vastly exceeded Verizon’s expectations. Rallying to the demands, Verizon and Motorola had more for shipping out on July 23rd. Read the rest of this entry »
