BlackBerry should be renamed LeakBerry. Photos, videos and technical specifications have been “leaked” over and over in the past few weeks. Rumors are flying. There are now stories of four new RIM Smartphones (BlackBerry Bold Touch, Torch 2, Orlando, and Touch), all of which have new capacitive touch screens. Mostly they seem to be “re-made” versions of the Curve and Torch, although there is a touch only phone as well.

BlackBerry Enters the World of Touch

The BlackBerry Orlando is mostly a Curve Sedona with a touch screen. It is supposed to ship with the new OS 6.1, have a physical keyboard and a trackpad. With the touch screen and the keyboard, it is kind of a “mini-Bold Torch.”

The new touch screen only BlackBerry is called the “Touch” or the CDMA version, the Monaco Touch. It appears to be more like an Android or iPhone device, using capacitive technology. It is reported to be coming with a 3.7 inch screen, 800×480 pixel resolution, 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, a MicrosSD slot, and a 5 megapixel camera.

The Bold Touch has some nice new features, including a new battery type. It’s a GSM device with a 5MP camera, 4GB of internal storage, 768MB or RAM, a 2.8-inch screen (640×480), and according to an article written by Jeffrey Van Camp, DigitalTrends, it has built in NFC technology. Since Apple has decided not to include the NFC yet, this will be a bonus for RIM. NFC is “near field communication” which allows your Smartphone to communicate with terminals like cash registers, helping you to avoid long lines in restaurants and such.

“The unit itself is extremely solid and the touchscreen is very responsive,” said BGR (Boy Genius Reports). “And who could forget that great and spacious BlackBerry keyboard? The BlackBerry Bold Touch also uses a new battery from RIM, so hopefully the addition of a touchscreen to this famous BlackBerry form factor won’t have too much of a negative impact on battery life.”

The Storm 3 Touch is also known as Blackberry Touch 9860. Here’s a short video preview of the new Storm 3:

BlackBerry has die-hard fans. If you are one of those BlackBerry users and like the BlackBerry keyboard, you will probably want to upgrade to the new Smartphones with both the touch screen and the keyboard. If you are new to BlackBerry and have been an iPhone user or an Android user, you will probably want to try the new BlackBerry Touch Smartphones. Will the new efforts by BlackBerry to stay in the market be enough to keep up with the Androids and iPhones? Google reports that there are currently 350,000 new device activations per day, and 3 billion apps overall have been installed. iPhone is trying to keep up. Will BlackBerry succeed? Let us know what you think.

RIM BlackBerry scored the worst in GoodGuide’s list of green cell phone manufacturers. According to an article by Wendy Koch, USA Today, BlackBerry only earned a 3.3 rating, mostly for the company’s environmental record. Nokia took top honors, with Samsung coming in second. Apple’s iPhone also scored in the lower half of the manufacturers, again not because the material in the iPhone is toxic, but because Apple itself has problems with its “ethical policies and performance.” Nokia scored as the top green manufacturer. 26 of 30 of the top cell phones scored were made by Nokia, each scoring 7.7 or 7.6 out of a possible 10 points. Nokia C6 scored best overall. This is pretty impressive.

Did Your Cell Phone Make the Green List?

“Our highest-rated cellphones have energy-efficient chargers and are made of environmentally preferable materials,” says a scorecard of 596 cellphones from 16 manufacturers by Good Guide, a company that rates products for their health, environmental and social impacts. The ranking says the top scorers are made by companies “implementing green production practices and takeback recycling programs.”

IDC (International Data Corporation) has its own list of good and bad manufacturers. The IDC study analyzes the sustainability efforts of 10 manufacturers. It ranks these manufacturers by their overall sustainability strategy, packaging, materials, energy, and end-of-life programs.

“Mobile operators play an important role in handset sustainability,” says Stephen Drake, program VP, Mobility and Telecom. “While they do not produce mobile phones, they are instrumental in driving the design, packaging, and materials used in handsets and are in the forefront in device lifecycle management from procurement to takeback. As the connection to the end customers, they can also influence end-user purchasing and are therefore critical players in the sustainable handset ecosystem.” IDC had this to say about the top 5 manufacturers on their list (alphabetically):

AT&T, for its broad focus on trying to pick sustainable handsets
Deutsche Telekom, for is focus on the raw materials in the mobile phones on its network
Sprint Nextel, for its efforts to develop eco-criteria that have been used to develop a specific line of green mobile phones
Telefonica, which has developed an eco-rating system for handset being sold in the United Kingdom
Vodafone, which is focused on materials sourcing for mobile phones on its network

How important is it to you that you support “green” manufacturers? Do you recycle your old cell phones? According IDC, only 10% of cell phones are recycled. In a world that is filling up with e-waste, it is important to consider alternatives. See my blog Give Your Gadgets a Green Burial. Perhaps you will decide to donate your cell phone to a charitable cause. Working together, we can make a difference.

Federal prosecutors in New Jersey are investigating mobile app companies. The Wall Street Journal reported that popular applications on the iPhone and Android mobile phones, including Pandora, transmit information about the phones, their users and their locations to outsiders, including advertising networks. Have you ever wondered how the ads on your mobile apps seem to know exactly what to target? Here’s the clue. The app companies are sharing your information.

Pandora’s Box—Mobile Apps Under Investigation

Pandora’s Box is opened. According to an article written by the Daily Mail Reporter, dailymail.co.uk, “Pandora along with other major Smartphone application developers are under federal investigation for illegally obtaining and transmitting user information without consent.” Pandora Media, Inc. said it received a subpoena that involved a federal grand jury investigation of information sharing practices of Smartphone application developers. The investigation comes after federal investigators in New Jersey found violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, a law passed in 1986 intended to reduce cracking of computers and to address computer-related offenses. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Makers of apps could also face complaints of unfair and deceptive trade practices from the Federal Trade Commission. Such complaints can be aimed at companies that fail to tell customers how they are collecting information. “Anthony Campiti, creator of the Pumpkin Maker iPhone application, told the Wall Street Journal that he also received a subpoena.

“They’re just doing information-gathering to get a better understanding”, Campiti said. “We’re not doing anything wrong and neither is anyone else doing anything wrong.”

Apple and Google have been asked to provide information. Both Apple and Google are supposed to be monitoring the application developers who list their apps in the Apple and Google app stores. Both companies have refused to comment about the investigation. In a study conducted by the Wall Street Journal on 101 Smartphone applications, 56 transmitted the phone’s unique device identifier to outside companies and firms. Apparently these 56 companies did so without the consent of the users. Uh oh!

Are you concerned about your privacy? Do you feel mobile app companies have the right to share your information? What about the information shared on your computer? Have you ever noticed that when you are shopping online that ads appear on web pages that seem specifically targeted to you? This is also done by sharing your information. If you shop for a new pair of running shoes, ads will pop up suggesting those same shoes, or perhaps running gear or sports clothes. Target marketing is not new. Mobile apps have just joined the fray.

Let’s keep an eye on the federal investigation.

photo credit: Japanese Factories at Risk

A devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier this month in Japan caused shortages of electronic components. It will also result in increased prices. Currently, Apple has to find alternative manufacturers for components of their new iPad2. While Apple may be able to find substitute manufacturers, those same manufacturers realize they have Apple in a desperate situation, and are charging more for those parts. In addition to Apple finding itself in a bind, consumer electronics as a whole are finding shortages of components. And of course, the old “supply and demand” axiom is pushing prices up.

Crisis in Japan Will Increase Consumer Prices

There are already signs of an increase in the price of memory chips. Display panels for computers, game consoles, and cell phones are also a problem due to the damaged Japanese factories. As a result, electronic goods such as computers, mobile phones and DVDs are predicted to be rising in price. Digital cameras and camcorders may be affected as well. Not only will we be affected by price increases, but by shortages of the electronic gadgets themselves.

Everything from automobile electronics to Smartphone components are in short supply. According to Terry Macalister, SMH, “a growing group of electronics, steel and car makers in Japan has suspended operations, creating the prospect of shortages of products further afield. Japanese electronics are in particular demand for televisions and audio equipment, but also as components in solar panels, computers and even vehicles. Japan is the world’s biggest supplier of silicon used to make semiconductor chips. NEC, Panasonic and Fujitsu are among the companies that have halted production and have reported damage to some of their factories. Sony has suspended production at seven plants and analysts say this will have an impact on lithium ion batteries and DVDs.”

The Japanese economy is being devastated by this crisis. Not only are there an estimated 18,000 lives lost in this disaster, but Japan will suffer economically while they regain their footing. The world looks to Japan for most things in the electronic market. Not only have factories been shut down, but ports are in jeopardy as well. All-in-all, it doesn’t look good for the Japanese. According to Macalister’s article, “massive daily monetary injections from the Bank of Japan have reached a total of ¥34 trillion ($425.8 billion) so far in short-term loans. An indication from the government that it could buy into the sharemarket helped shore up the Nikkei after dramatic declines earlier in the week.”

What does this mean for the consumer? As far as Smartphones go, there will likely be an increase in prices as well as some postponements for new product releases. I wonder if this will affect the release date of the new iPhone 5? Since Apple is already having trouble finding components for the iPad 2, it stands to reason that they may have trouble finding parts for the iPhone as well. So far, no one is speculating on a delay, but don’t be surprised.

Does this affect you personally? Were you waiting for the new iPhone 5 this summer? Do you think it will be delayed? We can only speculate and watch and wait.

The new iPhone from Apple is due out sometime this summer. Rumors are flying about just what the new iPhone will include. First of all, will it be called the iPhone 5? For simplicity, that’s what I will call it. Notable sites like PC World Report, iPhonereleasedate.org, and the UK’s The Independent are reporting “reliable rumors” (if there are such things.) Speculation about what will and won’t be included in the new iPhone differs, but most agree there will be a new case design. The back will be made from aluminum rather than glass, and the phone itself will be thinner. It is rumored that the screen will be shatterproof and scratch resistant. Other rumors include an HD audio system and a better “all the time” GPS mode.

iPhone 5—What’s in it?

The new iPhone may have face recognition. Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 will have sensors that will recognize your face and turn on your phone. Sounds like something out of Mission Impossible doesn’t it? With this technology, the security will be much improved, or so Apple would like us to believe. Just how accurate the face scanning will be, remains to be seen. What happens if you change your eye makeup style or wear colored contact lenses? Hmmm…

Will the iPhone 5 have 4G Video Chat? Sure, the iPhone 4 has video chat, but only at 3G speed. Can you imagine how fast 4G chatting will be? Of course if it is like the iPad 2, you can only video chat with other iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac users. While Apple would like the world to think only in Apple terms, there is a big world out there that doesn’t use the Apple products.

The biggest improvement may be longer battery life. Right now iPhone owners almost always complain about the short length of battery life on their iPhones. Of course this is true for most Smartphone owners. Rumor has it that the new iPhone will have a battery life of up to 14 hours of talk time on the 3G network and 7 hours of 4G talk time. Since you cannot replace the battery in the iPhone with an extended battery like you can most other Smartphones, it’s great that Apple may have included a better battery in the new iPhone.

The new iOS probably won’t include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. NFC is technology that allows Smartphones to send and receive information with nearby terminals for things like credit card transactions, and in some restaurants paying your tab instead of having to go up to the cashier. Bloomberg reports that Google will be trying out the new technology in New York and San Francisco in the next 4 months. Apple is reported to be holding back, citing that there is no “industry standard” yet for the NFC technology. According to a report by GigaOM, Verifone (PAY) is going to be including NFC technology in all the new in-store terminals. It seems like Apple better join the crowd.

Do you use a Cloud Server? I love using DropBox as well as Google Docs. I can access it now through my Droid X easily. I like the convenience of having all my documents available no matter how or where I access my files. Apple hasn’t joined the cloud computing technology yet. Will we see it in the new iPhone 5? Guess we will have to wait and see.

Which iPhone is faster—Verizon or AT&T? According to an article by Peter Svensson, (AP Technology) posted on TechBits, “the Verizon iPhone loads Web pages just as fast as AT&T’s version of the phone, even though Verizon’s network has lower data speeds, phone testing firm, Metrico Wireless reported.” However, Metrico Wireless said that data downloads on the Verizon iPhone turned out to be half as fast as those on AT&T’s network, but unless you are downloading data, most users didn’t notice much difference in web browsing. Metrico tested the Verizon iPhone’s performance with 4,000 calls and 10,000 Web page downloads in New York, Seattle, Washington, Baltimore, Chicago and Dallas, Rich McNally, Metrico Wireless’ VP of Information Products said.

Verizon iPhone vs. AT&T iPhone

Verizon has taken AT&T’s iPhone US exclusivity status away and trumped it with a more reliable network, or has it?

Verizon Wireless started selling the popular iPhone 4 in February. Verizon is known for having a more reliable network than AT&T, but Metrico Wireless said that their testing results didn’t come to the same conclusion. When downloading files while in a stationary position, then yes, Verizon had good results. But if you are traveling while downloading, Verizon had a 10% higher failure rate than AT&T.

“There are many factors that determine Web performance. Speed isn’t the only one,” said a Metrico spokesman. “There are also OS trends, rendering time, latency on the network, etc.”

Both versions of the iPhone, AT&T and Verizon, had “death grip” challenges. The “death grip” is the phenomenon of grasping the iPhone and having poor signals due to an antenna problem. Verizon’s iPhone has supposedly been redesigned to eliminate this problem, but apparently it wasn’t all that successful. Metrico Wireless’ tests were not affected by this as the “death grip” only occurs when a human hand grasps the iPhone, and the phones Metrico Wireless tests are attached to measuring equipment, not held by humans.

And so the battle between Verizon and AT&T continues. Are you an iPhone owner? Do you have the new Verizon iPhone or AT&T’s iPhone? Are you happy with the performance? Are you content with your wireless carrier? Let us know and we’ll post the results. By the way, both carriers are selling the iPad 2 as of March 11.

So, you have an electric car? Do you ever worry about finding your next charging station before running out of juice? There’s an app for that. PlugShare for the iPhone allows electric car drivers to locate the closest charging stations. Now you can rest easy that you will be able to travel the highways without worrying about being stranded with no power.

New iPhone App for Electric Cars Shows Charging Station Network

The new app also lists homeowners who are willing to share their power. The California-based Xatori announced their new app, PlugShare, earlier this month. According to ConsumerReports.org’s Car Blog, “To see a map of shared outlets in a given area, drivers enter a destination. If someone is using the app to share home electricity, an address, type of outlet, phone, and preferred time of contact is needed. For many people outlets are in the garage or house, and therefore may want to be home to let an electric car driver charge up.” How cool is that? People are actually willing to share their power with other electric car owners. Perhaps there is hope for the world. Of course, the app also includes a complete database of public charging stations across the US if you’d prefer just using public charging stations when you’re out on the road.

One concern is that homeowners offering to share may see a rise in their power bill. Xatori says the cost of charging a vehicle isn’t that much and that there shouldn’t be that much of an increase in the homeowners’ power bill. Homeowners who wish to share don’t need to worry about having a special outlet to signup, because EV owners will have their own vehicle plug-in adaptors. And the sense of being part of a group that furthers “greening” America may just offset the cost.

“Many people won’t have EVs right away, but everyone has an electrical outlet,” Xatori CEO Forrest North said in a statement. “Sharing electricity from a standard outlet only costs about $0.15 an hour, a small price to lessen our dependence on oil.” In addition, it is thought that most drivers will only be “topping off” their EVs rather than fully charging their vehicles.

Will this change the dependency on oil in the US? It is a step in the right direction. With the price of gas now over $4 in most states and still rising, the need for alternative transportation is becoming more critical. Proponents of electric cars are hoping with more awareness and availability of charging stations, more people will be purchasing electric vehicles soon. There is a movement called 4 Years. Go that was started in 2010 and intends to “green” the world by 2014. Their plan is to create awareness and assist people in making small, everyday changes that will result in a greener planet. Electric cars are just one part of the steps necessary to help.

The PlugShare app is only available for iPhone users at this time. Xatori plans to roll out the Android app “soon.” This is probably the first of many EV apps that we will see. It is exciting to think that app developers are working along the same thoughts and goals as environmentalists. What do you think? Let’s shout a rousing “Go Green!”

An iPhone 64GB prototype has surfaced in the ‘grey’ market in Hong Kong. According to an article by Sara Yin, PCMagazine.com, the rumor was first announced on Chinese-language blog Unwire.hk and later ‘confirmed’ by MIC Gadget. The 64GB model appears to be unlocked and running iOS 4.1. MIC Gadget’s photos of the model found are much like the iPhone 4 model that Gizmodo found last spring in a bar. The model shows lots of XX’s on its case. The model number states ‘XXXXX’, FCC ID number is ‘BCG- XXXXXX,’ and printed capacity is ‘XXGB.’

iPhone 64GB Prototype Found in China

Macrumors reported that the model found in China was produced in early 2010. They had analyzed the serial number from MIC Gadget’s photos and determined the phone was produced well before the launch of the iPhone 4 in June 2010. It is also running an older version the iOS.

Evidence suggests that Apple produced and then discarded the iPhone 64GB model. In June 2010, Apple came out with just 2 versions of the iPhone 4, with 16GB and 32GB capacities. Apple may still be planning to come out with the 64GB version, as it isn’t unlike them to come out with a third generation after the first release. According to PCMagazine, “the original iPhone debuted in 2007 with 4GB and 8GB of space, but in February 2008, Apple released another 16GB model. Then in July 2009 Apple launched the iPhone 3GS in 16GB and 32GB versions, but later added an 8GB model after recession-stricken consumers complained that the phones were priced too high.” When the iPhone 4 was released last year, many criticized Apple for not releasing a version with higher storage capacity.

Perhaps Apple will include a 64GB version of the iPhone 5. With Verizon now selling the iPhone, Apple will need to make the iPhone 5 something extra special in order to get iPhone 4 users willing to upgrade. Just as the iPad 2 isn’t all that much different than the iPad, Apple will need to put a lot of pizzazz into the iPad 3 to get people to upgrade.

Beware of buying a ‘grey’ market iPhone. Obviously Apple won’t be honoring any kind of warranty on these phones. With the battery life kind of lacking on the iPhone, you can’t send it back to get a new battery installed by Apple. Of course one solution to the short battery life is to buy a cool gadget that actually has a backup battery in it. There’s a new Apple approved aftermarket iPhone 4 case with an external battery built in. It takes over when your internal battery gets low and gives you another 3 1/2 hours of talk time. You can buy this rechargeable battery case for iPhone4 at batteries4less.

Are you a Catholic needing to go to confession? There’s an app for that. Seriously though, it’s not actually an app to substitute for confession. (The Catholic Church is very clear on this issue.) It is an app for the iPhone that helps you figure out how you’ve sinned (as if you didn’t know) and formulate a confession. It’s called Confession: A Roman Catholic App, and was created by Little iApps with the help of two Catholic priests ($1.99). And it has been given the blessing of Bishop Kevin C. Rhodes of the Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend, Indiana.

Forgiveness is Just an App Away

“Very cool; very useful,” wrote Thomas Peters of catholicvote.org, an online community for Catholics. Peters praised the app as being “not like those other programs that claim to ‘wash away sin’ and are essentially mockeries of confession, not preparations for the sacrament.”

This Confession App does not promise to forgive you of your sins. The app was developed as a tool to assist you with your confession, and offers a “personal examination of conscience,” plus a step-by-step guide to confessing. According to an article by Megan O’Neil, Appolicious, as you go through the app, you are guided through the 10 Commandments, with self-examination through a series of questions. For example: “Tap on the fourth commandment – honor thy father and mother – and you are asked several questions such as “Do I try not to bring peace into my home life?” and “Do I not care for my aged and infirmed relatives?” Check all that apply. Then, move into the confession feature. The app guides you through exactly how the sacrament should proceed, including your opening lines “In the name of the Father, Son… Bless me Father for I have sinned…” And when it is time to state your sins, the items that you had check-marked are listed for you, so you don’t find yourself scrambling or forgetting anything. Included in the app are no less than seven versions of the Act of Contrition, including one in Latin (for those who remember the pre-Vatican II days). Many of other important prayers are also there, including the Hail Mary, Our Father, Apostles’ Creed, etc.”

The app is not a substitute for meeting with a priest and receiving absolution. The Catholic Church looks at this app as a tool, a way to do a little soul searching. I find it interesting that it is only available to iPhone users. I guess those of us who own Droid or BlackBerry phones are without sin and need no confession. (Yeah, right.) With the age of smart technology, will there come a time when you can program your Smartphone to monitor your activities and log your most recent sins in preparation for your next confession? Interesting concept, don’t you think? What’s your take on the Confession app? Are you Catholic? Would you use it if you could?

The Motorola Xoom became available February 24th. With its 10.1 inch screen and 1280 by 800 resolution display, it is perfect for displaying pictures and presentations. The Xoom’s Honeycomb OS runs Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform, with a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of on-board user memory (plus an SD card slot). What’s not to love? Why not rush out and buy it now?

Motorola Xoom – Buy Now or Wait?

You might want to wait a bit before rushing out and buying the Xoom. According to JR Raphael, PCMagazine, the Wi-Fi-only edition of the Xoom may be worth waiting for. The Wi-Fi only version is supposed to be an additional $200 cheaper. In addition, the Xoom has shipped without Adobe Flash. (The Flash upgrade is expected in a few weeks.) Right now the Xoom is available at BestBuy and Verizon stores for $800 with no contract. With a 2 year contract Verizon will let you have it for $600, plus a $20 per month data plan and a $35 activation fee.

Are you a Honeycomb OS purist? Go with the Xoom. Motorola has promised to keep the “proprietary” junk off the Xoom. In addition, Google is using the Xoom to test and develop the Honeycomb OS. When it comes to system upgrades, you can bet that the “pure” Google tablets will get them first. Also, the other Android tablets don’t have as many cool features as the Xoom.

The iPad 2 premiered yesterday and will be available on March 11th. If you are vacillating between the Android OS and the iOS, the new iPad 2 has some really nice features. The biggest drawback to the iPad is that it doesn’t have Adobe Flash either. If you are a Google apps user, you will want to stick with the Android OS. The iPad doesn’t have a USB port and the video calling feature only works between Apple users. If you aren’t sure, wait a week (until the iPad 2 is available) and go to BestBuy and play with both the iPad 2 and the Xoom.

To wait or not to wait? There are almost 100 Android tablets coming in 2011. If you want to wait a little, you will probably see some stiff competition for the Motorola Xoom. Size options will be available, which will give some price options as well. My personal preference is to wait for the Amazon Kindle Android. It will have all the features of a tablet, as well as be Kindle oriented. I love my Kindle, and it seems like a good combination to me.
