A new iPhone app allows medical staff to monitor a patient’s status. The Nashville Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Department of Anesthesiology created an iPhone application called VigiVu. Tokyo-based middleware company HI Corp. announced it has developed new software to convert your 2D cell phone games into 3D games without special 3D glasses. A new technology, Surround Vision, can use your Smartphone to view an image not yet on the main screen of your TV. Imagine being able to see different camera angles of a news cast by just pointing your cell phone. You could see all the shot footage from different cameras that never makes the main screen. New technology looms in the near future that will enable your cell phone to detect toxic gas and air quality. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, specifically, its Science and Technology Directorate division, wants to create 40 new prototypes of cell phones by the end of the year that would detect airborne toxic chemicals. BlackBerry cell phone maker, Research in Motion, is set to buy QNX Software Systems, which was acquired by Harmon, which makes audio and entertainment products. Microsoft has entered the phone market! The new phones, Kin One and Kin Two will hit the US market in May through Verizon, and through carrier Vodafone Group PLC (which owns Verizon Wireless in partnership with Verizon Communications Inc.), in Germany, Italy, Spain and The United Kingdom later this fall. Windows Mobile 7 takes off in a new direction with a whole new OS. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 will be developing software for the Windows Phone 7 Series devices using either Silverlight or XNA, the toolset used to create Xbox games. The new OS is a complete break from the old Windows Mobile 6x, and Microsoft has no plans to make those phones using Mobile 6x upgradeable. Read the rest of this entry »

“Better Off Ted,” a TV series on Hulu Network, offers us a spoof on how to better “green” the world. The TV show clip takes place at Veridian Dynamics, a corporation that will make anything for anyone regardless of ethical, moral, or biological consequences. The Industry analyzers Canalys, reports that the purchasing trend of mobile users is leaning more and more towards touch screen phones. The study does not differentiate between devices with just touch screens or those with keyboard interfaces so it is hard to say if the touch screens alone are the big seller.
