Obama has declared war on driving while using cell phones! Driver distraction based accidents are becoming an epidemic. A German computer engineer announced he had deciphered and published the security code used to encrypt most of the world’s cell phone calls. Karsten Nohl said the G.S.M. (Global System for Mobile Communications) algorithm, which was developed in 1988 was still in use after 21 years, leaving 80% of mobile calls at risk. Read the rest of this entry »

The Transborder Immigrant Tool offers a high-tech way to illegal immigrants to find water as they cross the desert into the United States. Our U.S. lawmakers are working on a bill in the House of Representatives to permanently ban making in-flight voice calls. The Senate version of that bill isn’t as stringent and doesn’t include the permanent ban. The Inflight Passenger Communications Coalition is of course supporting the Senate’s version of the bill. Overuse of your cell phone may cause nerve inflammation or numbness in your hand. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, also known as “cell phone elbow,” is caused when the arm is bent too long, (as from holding a cell phone to your ear), putting tension on the ulnar nerve, which runs from under the collarbone, down along the inside of the elbow to the pinky finger. An Irish firm has released new software, Bully Stop, allowing parents to monitor and block text messaging and both identified and unidentified callers on their children’s phones. LG is sponsoring PSA ads on YouTube to influence teens who are sexting. The theme of these ads is to “Stop and Think” before sending that sexting. The ads also concentrate their efforts on mean rumor texting. (See the ads at Give It a Ponder.)

What is SEXTING? It is a coined word for sending text messages with sexual content, be it text or images, that will soon be showing up in the dictionary. Sexting is a sign of the technology affecting our society, for good or bad. Without being judgmental, technology affects all of our daily lives. Sexting is just one more example of how technology permeates our awareness.

According to a study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, 42% of mobile users won’t switch carriers due to the outrageous early termination fees (ETF). According to the report, even when mobile users are somewhat or very dissatisfied with their cell phone provider, the cost of early termination keeps them locked into the contract.
