Effective January 4, 2011, Motorola will split into 2 companies. According to an article written by Peter Svensson, AP, Motorola is splitting its consumer-oriented side, which makes cell phones and cable set-top boxes, from the side that sells police radios and barcode scanners to government and corporate customers. Shareholders of record on December 21, 2010 will receive shares in both the consumer business, Motorola Mobility, and the professional business, Motorola Solutions after the first of the year. When Verizon finally gets the iPhone 4, Apple’s stocks will skyrocket. This is according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Munster is so sure that Verizon will have the iPhone 4 in early 2011 that he has included Verizon in his Apple sales estimates for next year. Munster is predicting that Verizon will sell 9 million iPhones next year, and that is a conservation estimate. Read the rest of this entry »

Verizon will be giving 60 airports nationwide faster wireless data networks. According to Roger Yu, USA Today, Verizon plans to have the faster networks in place by the end of 2010. 4G networks allow radiologists to download and upload images 10 times faster. With the new technology, 4G offers a way for radiologists to do preliminary reads or image demonstrations on Smartphones and iPads. It won’t replace actually reading the image with the more sophisticated imaging equipment, but it allows radiologists the flexibility to view a “quickie.” Read the rest of this entry »

Last month Verizon announced its plan to offer 4 G wireless service to Seattle by the end of the year. 4 G is a new-technology market already offered in Seattle by Sprint and T-Mobile, so naturally Verizon wants to join in the race. AT&T Mobility, having exclusive rights to the iPhone at this time (which is NOT 4 G), hasn’t announced plans to join the 4 G race in 2011. Which Verizon phone will get the Android 2.2 operating system first? The just released Droid X was supposed to get the upgrade by the end of July, but as a Droid X owner, I have not seen the upgrade yet. Verizon announced a five-fold increase in data use in the first week after the Droid X was released. Verizon Wireless saw a similar surge in mobile data use when it introduced the original Motorola Droid in November 2009. Droid X was released on July 15th and was sold out by the next day. The rush to buy the new Droid X vastly exceeded Verizon’s expectations. Rallying to the demands, Verizon and Motorola had more for shipping out on July 23rd. Read the rest of this entry »

Justin Blanford, 17, decided to donate 36 of his 87 cell phones to Verizon’s Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Justin is a senior at Rocky Mount Preparatory School in Rocky Mount, NC. 6 of 87 cell phones? And all working? Amazing!
