3 Simple Suggestions on How to Save Money on Your Cell Phone Bill

save your money and one day it'll return the favor by • Eliane •

Cell phones have become a staple in all of our lives. Leave home without your mobile phone and you are sure to feel naked, and sometimes even useless. You use it for absolutely everything, games, texting, phone calls, organizing your schedule and even browsing the internet. If your battery dies, it can almost feel impossible to get everything you need done. However, as convenient and useful as they are, there is often nothing more shocking than when that cell phone bill comes in at the end of the month. How many times can you recount your mouth hitting the floor as you tear open your cell phone bill each month? If this has ever happened to you, then here are some tips on how to save on your cell phone bill each month.

Learn to Love Skype

Skype has become the world’s favorite service when it comes to dirt cheap, or even free, calls all over the world. The problem is that it isn’t portable or as convenient as a cell phone right? Wrong. Skype is now available with your phone, and if you are sick of sky high bills, you need to get on the VOIP train. As for now it is available as an iPhone application and will also be made available for the Nokia N97 and BlackBerries in the coming weeks.

Get Passionate about Prepaid

Back in the day, prepaid phones used to be laggy, inconvenient and downright worthless if you hoped to do anything other than call for pizza delivery. Those times have changed and now prepaid phones are starting to get right up there with the elite phones. For example, take a look at the new Motorola i465 which has a QWERTY keyboard and a whole host of features and function. Pair it with a low cost $50 a month plan and you will have everything you need at your fingertips, without the jaw dropping bill at the end of the month.

Tickle your Fancy with Text

If you find yourself always taking advantage of your QWERTY keyboard and texting far more than you call, you should look into a text only plan. Keep in touch, use applications, listen to music and do everything else you can do with a smartphone, except make calls. It is a great way to keep your landline and have a convenient mobile phone with great usability. Take a gander at the Peek Pronto. Essentially it is a Blackberry, without the phone. It usually comes in at just $80 and can be used with an unlimited email, internet and texting plan for just $20 a month. If that’s not affordable convenience, what is?

The fact is that if you want to save money on your cell phone bill, you need to be creative. Make phone calls, do your research, get in contact with your service provider and ask all the questions you can. If you notice costs on your bill that seem overblown or unnecessary, call and see if you can cancel them. If you never use your phone to make calls, get a text only phone. Tailor your mobile phone service to your lifestyle and budget. You do not have to be tied to that $100 a month plan just because all the “cool kids” are doing it. The cell phone industry is in major competition, take advantage of it and find the service that specifically suits your needs, and budget.
