The United Arab Emirates’ telecom authority announced this week that BlackBerry data access will be blocked. Beginning October 11th the BlackBerry will be reduced to being just a cell phone while in the UAE. This means users would no longer be able to access BlackBerry messaging, email, and the internet.

UAE Bans BlackBerry Data Usage

The UAE sites “national security” issues with the BlackBerry. Basically, the UAE wants to be able to eavesdrop on its citizens, but BlackBerry data is transmitted through an encrypted, out-of-country site, making it difficult for the UAE to do so. Saudi Arabia is banning BlackBerry messenger, for the same reasons.

The US State Department is strongly criticizing UAE’s decision. PJ Crowley, Department spokesman, said at a press briefing on Monday that the State Department is “disappointed” by the announcement, adding, “It’s about what we think is an important element of democracy, human rights, and freedom of information and the flow of information in the 21st century. It was the essence of the Secretary’s internet freedom speech and it’s an argument that we make to countries like Iran and China. It’s also an argument that we make to friends and allies of ours like the UAE.”

The US is not practicing what it preaches. While it condemns the UAE’s decision, the US federal authorities are looking for ways to increase their monitoring of the Web. Is there any doubt that we are in the age of Big Brother Watching? Is it justified? Is our country at risk? What’s your take on it?
