US consumers lead Canadians in becoming wireless only subscribers. About 25% of American households have ditched the land line telephones in favor of going with only wireless service. Canadians follow that with 12% going wireless.
Land Line Phones Being Dumped for Wireless
Worldwide, cell phone usage is definitely up. In many countries, cell phones are the preferred form of communication, especially where internet access isn’t always available. (See my blog Cell Phones Are Sweeping the World Technology Race.) Wireless service is becoming cheaper and cheaper, as well as more inclusive in the services offered, so naturally more people are subscribing.
The MagicJack and Skype have been whittling down the number of land lines used as well. While this has no bearing on the statistics of going strictly wireless, the trend is definitely going towards leaving land lines behind. Even with the unlimited long distance offered by many land line companies, it is still expensive to call another country. With Skype and the MagicJack, calls are much more reasonable or even free.
Why pay for both a land line and a cell phone? I have been a wireless only kind of gal for about 6 years. I do have Skype as well, but use it only for overseas calls. What about you? Do you still have a land line phone, or have you cut the cord?
