A Saudi judge ordered a 13 year old girl to receive 90 lashes AND 2 years in prison for being caught with a cell phone at school. The rest of the story is that upon being discovered with the banned cell phone, the girl physically attacked her teacher. Small wonder the judge imposed a harsh sentence.

Was this judge a bit too harsh? I think so. Come on, even with the girl attacking the teacher, (unless she severely injured the teacher) a prison sentence of 2 years seems a bit over the top. She is only 13 years old. On the other hand, they probably don’t have a lot of juvenile delinquents in Saudi, especially when they pass such severe sentences.
Is this just another case of human rights being violated in a Middle Eastern country? Is this the exception to the rule, or the common practice over there? Should we alert Amnesty International? What’s your take on this?
